How Many Teenagers Need Braces?

Crooked teeth can impact how healthy your teen’s teeth are as they enter adulthood. Crowded, crooked, and misaligned teeth are more likely to lead to common problems, such as:

  • Cavities
  • Gingivitis and gum disease
  • TMJ disorders
  • Chipped, broken teeth
  • Abnormal wear
  • Embarrassment and self-esteem concerns

Another thing to watch for is whether or not the wisdom teeth are causing any tooth crowding as they erupt. The extra pressure that wisdom teeth place on your teen’s smile can make straight teeth become crooked in little to no time at all.

How Long Will I Have To Wear Braces?

How long your teen will need to wear braces depends on the alignment of their bite, jaw development, and tooth positioning. Some of our teen orthodontic patients complete their treatment in less than a year, while others take two or three years to bring everything into alignment.

Braces Your Way!

Dr. Patel and Dr. Womble will be happy to discuss the advantages of each type of braces with you and your teen so that you can select the type that’s best for your priorities and dental health.

Why Should I Get Braces Now or Never?

Adjusting to having braces, in the beginning, may seem a bit difficult, but they can improve your oral health and self-esteem. After all, your smile is one of the very first things that other people notice about you. If you’re too embarrassed about the way it looks, getting braces can help.

What Can I Eat While Wearing Braces?

Take special caution to not eat any hard or sticky foods that could pull your braces or brackets off your teeth. Damaging or losing a bracket could set your treatment time back. If you wear removable braces, such as Invisalign®, all you need to do is take them out during your meals.

Avoid things such as hard/fresh vegetables, crunchy pretzels, nuts, hard bread, or sticky treats.

Softer fruits, cooked vegetables, grains, and meats are still fine to eat, you may just need to take smaller bites than normal.

Will Orthodontic Treatment Change My Lifestyle?

You’ll need to adjust your diet and oral hygiene habits during treatment, but you can continue participating in everyday activities like athletics or band. Adjusting to braces is more about patience and forming good habits. You’ll need to visit your orthodontist every four to six weeks for adjustments and changes in your elastics, but the scheduling demands are fairly flexible.

Can I Get Those Invisible Braces (Invisalign® Teen) Instead of Traditional Ones?

Invisalign® Teen braces and ceramic braces are great options for teens that are concerned about having braces that are visible when they talk or smile around their friends. Depending on the severity of your teen’s bite, either option may work just fine!

What Can I Do to Downplay Braces?

Avoid unnecessary length to your treatment by:

  • Making sure to keep your appointments so that adjustments aren’t delayed
  • Following home care instructions so that everything moves along in a timely manner
  • Avoiding foods that could break or damage your braces
  • Wearing your bands, appliances, or other equipment as directed

During your initial consultation, our Atlanta orthodontists will be able to give you a good idea about how long the length of your teen’s orthodontic treatment will take to complete.

How Long Do I Have to Wear a Retainer After Treatment?

It’s important to wear your retainer to keep your teeth straight. If your teen hasn’t had his or her wisdom teeth removed yet, it’s even more important to wear a retainer.

Teeth naturally want to shift back into their previous position, even if they’re perfectly straight after wearing braces. Be sure to take good care of your retainer so that it lasts for years. If it ever breaks, have it repaired or replaced right away. Your teen may even be sleeping in his or her retainer a decade from now to keep their teeth straight!

What Causes Crooked Teeth?

Crowded or crooked teeth can be caused by a number of different concerns, including:

  • Early loss of a baby tooth
  • Smaller jaw size
  • Use of a pacifier or thumb sucking when young
  • Genetics

How Much Do Braces For Teens Cost in Atlanta?

The cost of your teen’s braces will depend on the extent of their tooth misalignment, how long they need treatment, and the type of braces that they choose.

Your dental insurance may cover a portion or all of your teenager’s orthodontic treatment. Plus, convenient payment plans are available with interest-free dental financing through CareCredit®. Enjoy low monthly payments that fit your budget.
